GREENHOUSE FOR YOU

Choosing a greenhouse can be quite a difficult task, because you have to understand the wide range of manufacturers and suppliers, compare different models, designs, sizes and prices.

In this article, we will provide an overview of the most popular types of greenhouses that are available on the Latvian greenhouse market.

GREENHOUSE SHAPE AND STYLE

  • Commonly seen forms in small gardens are semi – circular galvanized metal – polycarbonate greenhouses, also film greenhouses, which are basically used for growing various greenhouse crops.
  • Greenhouses with a wooden frame are usually produced as gable roof constructions, veranda – type constructions on the wall of the house, also curved shapes.
  • Aluminum – glass greenhouses are available in various forms – free – standing double – sloped or single – sloped roof constructions, T – shaped orangeries, veranda – type constructions on the wall of the house, square – shaped models and others. In addition to each greenhouse model, the Belgian manufacturer Janssens, represented by us, offers to choose the color of aluminum profiles, as well as various style options:
    • Victorian narrow glasses – will bring the scenic English style mood to your garden. We especially recommend it for gardens with greenery in a free plan or English style.
    • Retro – style decorative panels – this is a special Janssens offer for gourmets, which will give the garden space a bit of a bygone era character.
    • Mur raised base of the greenhouse – by choosing the decorative finish of the raised base, it is possible to match other structures in your garden.

MANUFACTURING TIME

Lightweight polycarbonate and film greenhouses in standard sizes (2x3m, 4x6m, etc.) are most often available in the warehouses of Latvian suppliers and can be purchased immediately.

On the other hand, when choosing aluminum – glass constructions, you may have to wait from one to three and even six months, depending on the season. Considering the fact that such constructions are not produced in Latvia, they are ordered from foreign manufacturers – Belgium, Germany, Lithuania, etc. Greenhouses are manufactured to order. The Belgian manufacturer Janssens offers a range of standard models with a certain configuration, which are available relatively quickly, currently within one month. Currently, the waiting time for individual order models is around three months. Later in the spring and summer season, due to the high demand, the production time is longer. The end of March and the beginning of April is the last time to order a greenhouse if you want to grow tomatoes and cucumbers already this year.

GREENHOUSE APPLICATION

Classically, greenhouses are used for growing various greenhouse crops – cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, etc. For this purpose, both the cheapest and the most expensive solutions can be chosen, evaluating the financial possibilities and the required longevity of the structure. If a separate farm area is provided in the garden, which is separated from the rest of the garden space, then in this case the visual appearance is secondary and it is essential that the greenhouse fulfills its basic function. However, more and more people are trying to combine the pleasant with the useful.

Orangery – type greenhouses are used both as garden gazebos, where you can enjoy the garden in all its seasons while growing tomatoes, cucumbers, grapes and other crops in pots or by installing raised beds in part of the greenhouse. This type of cultivation is suitable for those who want to grow just enough fresh vegetables for their daily salad. Housewives who prepare preserves for winter stocks will probably not have enough with a few plants in pots. Taking into account the purpose of such gazebo – type greenhouses – orangeries, they should not be hidden in the farthest corner of the garden, so the visual appearance is very important here.

The Belgian manufacturer Janssens has been offering elegant and very durable aluminum – glass constructions for more than 75 years. They are available in various sizes and shapes: free – standing double – sloped or single – sloped roof structures, T – shaped orangeries, veranda – type greenhouses on the wall of the house, square and cathedral – shaped models and others. Models are available from only 3.8 sq.m. up to huge constructions of 100 sq.m. and more.

Different greenhouse interior solutions are possible:

FOUNDATION AND INTERIOR OF THE GREENHOUSE

  • Light construction greenhouses are placed on the ground, special concreting of the foundations is usually not necessary, the manufacturer’s instructions must be followed. In such greenhouses, beds are most often made, which can be made with supporting walls for convenience, raised beds can be made using plastic or wooden solutions, agrotextile, paving stone, concrete slabs, etc. can be used to cover the paths.
  • Aluminum (also wooden) constructions with glass coating (or partial polycarbonate coating) are very heavy, for example ~20 sq. m aluminum – glass construction weighs ~900 kg (depending on the package). It is desirable that the installation and assembly of the greenhouse is carried out by experienced masters, so that the structure is installed according to all the manufacturer’s instructions, is safe to use and lasts a long time. Most often, glass – aluminum structures are installed:
    • Placing the greenhouse on the ground by concreting ribbon or pillar foundations, or using screw piles – this method will be suitable if the greenhouse is intended mainly for cultivation. Raised beds with paths can be created inside such a greenhouse. For beds, it is most practical to use WPC (wood plastic composite) boards, which will be a long-term solution, since the material will be in contact with soil and moisture all the time. Concrete slabs, paving stones, outdoor tiles, etc. can be used for paths. From a maintenance point of view, it will not be practical to use loose coverings for greenhouse paths.
    • Placing the greenhouse on a pavement or terrace covering – this type will be suitable for those who combine a garden recreation area with cultivation. When choosing a cover, the existing buildings and constructions in the garden should be taken into account. If there is an existing paving, then it is recommended to choose the same or a similar paving stone, pattern for the greenhouse. You can choose both wooden and WPC (wood plastic composite) terrace boards for the terrace covering. The base cover should protrude at least 20 cm outside the perimeter of the greenhouse, but it can also be larger and serve as an additional outdoor recreation area. Choosing such a foundation, the greenhouse is installed on the finished pavement or terrace covering.
    • Different mixed solutions are possible, for example by creating sunken beds in the terrace covering. Such a solution can be created in the whole or only part of the greenhouse. It is possible to cover part of the greenhouse with outdoor tiles and install raised beds in part. The solutions can be different, the important thing is to find the most successful one that will best suit your usage goals.

ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT AND ACCESSORIES FOR GREENHOUSES

www.stiklasiltumnicas.lv offers full service installation and equipping of Janssens glass – aluminum greenhouses. A very wide range of additional equipment is available for Janssens aluminum – glass greenhouses. In addition to the standard equipment, which can be assembled individually – roof and wall windows, louvered (Louvre-style) wall window, sliding or opening doors, our customers most often choose:

  • Automatic windows – they do not require batteries or electricity connection. They work with gas, which expands in heat and opens the window, while in cold, as the gas contracts, the window closes automatically. This additional equipment is chosen most often because it is not expensive compared to the benefits – there is no need to worry that the plants will overheat if one day you forget to open the windows or go on vacation.
  • Shading curtains – as Janssens only offers a glass coating for its greenhouses to prevent plants from overheating and burning, special shading curtains are offered. They are also visually very tasteful and will fit in both a greenhouse and a garden gazebo.
  • Lowered entrance door threshold.
  • Mosquito nets for windows and doors.
  • Shelves, etc.
