Which plants are most commonly used in hedges?

In recent years, thujas have become popular in Latvian gardens because they are evergreen, relatively fast-growing and planting material is readily available. However, other conifers – spruce, yew, pine, juniper – can also be used for hedges. Among deciduous shrubs, cornus, ninebark, barberries, spireas, lilacs are often used. Various climbing plants can also be used for hedging.

Do hedges need to be shaped regularly?

Hedges can be either shaped or free-growing. If you don’t have the time to clip your hedge regularly, you must choose free-growing planting material. This is mostly the case with many deciduous shrubs, such as lilacs and ninebark. The western thuja Smaragd can only be formed by clipping the tops.

How much does a hedge shaping cost?

Hedge shaping starts from EUR 2.50/m depending on the type, height and condition of the hedge. Other hedge maintenance – fertilising, re-cropping and mulching – is done at an hourly rate starting from 12 EUR/h In addition, material costs are calculated, for example for fertiliser and mulch.
